STEM Education Learning Tours - Summer 2012

As part of our approach to building the capacity of the field and strengthening the community of practice, the Boston STEM Network’s Out of School Time Task Force is coordinating a series of STEM Learning Tours, visiting summer learning program sites around Boston, including MathPower at Northeastern University and Thompson Island Outward Bound Education Center.  

These FREE tours are open to STEM education professionals who are interested in learning from each other how programs address skill building, program implementation and quality of training for frontline staff. Each STEM Learning Tour will include pre-tour readings and a guided reflective learning component to maximize the learning opportunities of the tours.

2012 Tour Schedule

Thompson Island Outward Bound: August 16th, 2012 from 10:00am-2:00pm

Thompson Island Outward Bound's primary purpose is to provide adventurous and challenging experiential learning programs that inspire character development, compassion, community service, environmental responsibility and academic achievement. Thompson Island Outward Bound principally serves early adolescents from all economic and social communities of greater metropolitan Boston, and the institutions and adults who support them.

The Summer Learning Program is a unique alternative to summer school for Boston Public School students. The program offers an innovative blend of academics and enrichment activities while immersing students in the natural world of the island’s forests, beaches, meadows and marshes. Thompson Island partnered with the National Park Service, Orchard Gardens K-8 School and John Marshall Elementary School to serve 160 students over the 2011 summer season.

Transportation to and from the island will be provided. Participants will arrive at Long Wharf at 9:00am for a 9:15 departure time. REGISTER NOW

MathPOWER: July 30th, 2012 from 8:30-11:00 at Northeastern University

MathPOWER works with students, educators, schools, and community organizations in Boston to improve student achievement in mathematics. MathPOWER leads several initiatives to support the goal that all students will succeed in mathematics, including coaching teachers and providing professional development, staffing afterschool programs that focus on academic support, and running a summer academy.  In addition to emphasizing strong math skills, MathPOWER works to build resiliency skills that research has shown are essential in helping  students  persist  toward their goals, including postsecondary education.
