Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts: Changing the World through STEM: Teen Career Expo

Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts (GSEM) has been selected as a STEM Advocacy Champion by Girl Scouts of the USA, one of only 17 Girl Scout councils to receive this honor.  In this role GSEM will lead efforts at the local and state level to increase girls’ involvement in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).

Through extensive research GSEM has discovered that although interest in STEM is high among girls, few consider it their number one career choice.  The low percentage of women working in STEM careers and the under representation of girls in the pipeline for these careers speaks to the need for ongoing attention to engaging girls in STEM.  Through GSEM’s passion and commitment to staying at the forefront of girl-only programming we believe we can do our part to help reverse these trends in eastern Massachusetts by providing girls with exposure to STEM programming and careers.

On Sunday, October 28th, Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts will host, Changing the World through STEM: Teen Career Expo, for 250 girls in grades 6- 12.  Girls will be exposed to careers in STEM fields through hands-on activities, guest speakers and a trade show attended by local corporations, colleges and universitiesUsing the Girl Scouts’ girl-led approach, girls will play an active role in setting the day’s agenda by selecting workshop tracks based on their STEM interests. This conference is open to all girls whether they are members in Girl Scouts or not.
